Sip: Reviewing the Simplest Color Picker for iPhone and Mac

Designers and developers, take notice. Sip, which released a successful Mac app in 2013, is now available for iPhone as well.

They are both free, but the Mac app also offers a pro version for $9.99.

Purpose & Functionality

Sip iOS App

Sip for iPhone provides a remarkably intuitive way to collect colors, organize into palettes, edit to perfection and share via email. If you also own the pro version of Sip for Mac, you can sync your color palettes with your computer.

Sip Mac App

Sip for Mac is a menu bar app with just the right mix of simplicity and functionality. It has similar capabilities to the iPhone app (color selection, color editting, palette creation and sharing) as well as additional functionality. For Designers, there are extensions for Illustrator and Photoshop, and developers can copy colors into any of 49 color formats.

Rating: simplicity, usefulness, beauty and necessity

  • Simplicity. (10/10) Sip is the simplest color picker I've used for iPhone and Mac.
  • Usefulness. (9/10) If you spend any time at all designing or developing, Sip will prove quite useful.
  • Beauty. (8/10) Both apps have a clean style that fits well in the aesthetics of iOS and OSX.
  • Necessity. (6/10) Although not a necessity, once Sip becomes a part of your workflow, you'll wonder how you got along without it.
  • Stickiness. (8/10) I haven't been using Sip for long, but it provides functionality that makes things easier. So unless another app comes around with a better take on the idea, Sip will stay installed on my iPhone and Mac.
