Omnifocus 2: Reviewed
If you follow the getting things done (GTD) method of organization, Omnifocus may be for you. Omnifocus was created by the Omni Group, a group of talented developers known for creating powerful, award-winning apps. Omnifocus 2 is currently available for iPhone & Mac, and the iPad version is in development.
Purpose & Functionality
Omnifocus 2 provides all the power you need to get things done. It is widely known as the most powerful to-do app available for the Apple ecosystem. iMore.com describes Omnifocus as having “the most features and organization options of any todo app avialable for either Mac or iOS.”
Rating: simplicity, usefulness, beauty and necessity
- Simplicity. (7/10) Omnifocus doesn’t have a reputation for being a simple to-do app, but the Omni Group has done a good job of reducing the learning curve in Omnifocus 2.
- Usefulness. (10/10) Omnifocus provides the capability to fit any form of GTD. If you love keeping things organized, Omnifocus gives you plenty of tools—folders, projects, flags, contexts, locations, perspectives & more.
- Beauty. (9/10) Omnifocus 2 looks good. I especially like the smooth animations.
- Necessity. (8/10) Omnifocus 2 isn’t an app for everyone (some people prefer less control), but if you follow GTD or are like the idea of having complete control over your tasks, Omnifocus 2 is for you.
- Stickiness. (9/10) I switched away from Omnifocus 2 after using it for quite a while. I didn’t switch because I was unsatisfied. I switched because my life changed dramatically. I wanted to see if another app would better fit my needs, but I haven’t found one. I’m switching back to Omnifocus 2.
Alternatives
I don't put Omnifocus in the same category as to-do apps like Any.do or Wunderlist. It is made for a different type of user. I tried to list apps that are made specifically for GTD.
